Quite understandably, people look to us for solutions to the challenges faced by towns. We will have a lot to say on this, but let's start with two basic principles. First, that there are as many solutions to the challenges faced by towns as there are towns themselves. The naive belief that a one-size-fits-all suite of solutions can be imposed upon towns is part of the problem. Following the opening of the Mersey Gateway in October 2017, The Queen and the newly-married Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle performed the official opening on June 14th 2018, making their first royal visit together.
The 92-year-old monarch officially opened the Mersey Gateway Bridge, a £1.86 billion six lane toll crossing designed to ease traffic between Runcorn and Widnes.
The official opening of the structure did not actually take place on the bridge as Storm Hector was battering Merseyside with winds of up to 60mph.
Instead, the Queen carried out an official opening ceremony at Widnes' Catalyst Museum, which offers a bird's eye view of the new crossing from the glass top observation gallery.
